ARCHITECTURE THAT IS APPRECIATED IN THE WORLD
Murikka has been named after the winner of an architecture contest. It is designed by two Finnish architects, Pekka Helin and Tuomo Siitonen. In the terminology of metal industry "murikka" means an unworked piece of metal, but as a building Murikka is a noble and in the world well-known ex-ample of the architecture in the 1970s'.
Murikka which is covered with copper is situated in Teisko, within the area of the city of Tampere. It takes half an hour to drive to Murikka from the heart of Tampere. The institute has an area of 63 hectares and 3 kilometres of shoreline at the lake Näsijärvi. The building merges inconspicuously and beautifully with the surrounding nature, and the nature presents itself in every season even in-side through the large windows.
The property owned by the Finnish Metalworkers' Union was com-pleted in 1977.
FOLK HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE WORKING LIFE
Metalworkers' Murikka Institute is a folk high school for the working life. It offers trade union edu-cation and education in developing work communities. Our education is mainly directed to adults who are members of the Finnish Metalworkers' Union and active in the working life.
Our most central courses are those for shop stewards and those dealing with organisational activities. At our institute one can also study many skills connected to the working life as well as take all-round education. We plan the education and training in cooperation with the Finnish Metalworkers' Union. The union also pays for the training of its members. As a folk high school we receive state grant for our educational activities.
Most of our education consists of short courses. Murikka's nine teachers base their teaching on a humanistic idea of man, and they build the teaching on students' own experiences. We have annually almost 4000 students and organise approximately 160 courses.
The personal of Murikka is wishing you welcomed to study in the metalworkers own institute!
